United Nations Lifts Sanctions on President of Syria Before Presidential Visit

United Nations Security Council members voted in favour to an American proposal to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his presidential meeting the coming week.

Sharaa was named provisional head of state following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that removed the former president in December 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of internal conflict.

The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under UN sanctions while commanding the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to al-Qaeda. Washington eliminated the group from its registry of international terrorist organizations this past July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the penalties, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude to Washington and supportive states for assisting of Syria and its people."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

Sharaa's White House visit on Monday comes after President Trump said the Syrian leader demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.

The pair met for the first time in May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through the Middle East.

Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".

The HTS organization he led was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country before he cut connections back in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

Monday's visit will not be the president's debut journey to the United States during this period. In September, he became the initial Syrian president to speak before the global assembly in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.

During his address, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position across international circles" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
